Peter Hurd (AM 1904-1984) – Dona Nestorita – Lithograph, 1941, ed. 50 (commissioned by Associated American Artists), 13 3/8 x 10 7/8, signed and titled in pencil. This piece is in excellent condition. A detailed and expressive image.

An excerpt from “The Lithographs of Peter Hurd” about the print: “The subject of this portrait was a charming and intelligent old lady, Sra Nestorita Aragon Vda. De Lara who lived to be over 100. Born in Saint Rosalia, Chihuahua, she cam to San Patricio in the early nineties (1890’s). She had many amusing and sometimes exciting reminiscences of her early life – also a considerable repertory pf Mexican folk songs which she sang in a high quavering soprano. A large portrait in oil of her by Henriette is in the permanent collection in the Roswell Museum”. Two of her grandsons are also the subject of two of Hurd’s lithographs.

From AAA: Peter Hurd, born in New Mexico, where he maintained a ranch throughout his life, portrayed his native land which he loved and knew all too well. Hurd studied at the Pennsylvania Academy and spent his winters in Philadelphia where he was a member of the Alliance and the Chester County artist associations. He received the first prize in landscape at the Wilmington Society of Fine Arts in 1930. At the New Mexico Military Institute, his frescos decorate the Thomas Memorial Building. Perhaps his widest acclaim came from his illustrations from “Last of the Mohicans”, “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and “The Story of Siegfried”. Hurd was accorded the unique honor of having two one-man shows in New York at the same time.
